One of the ways Soroptimist International of Riverside helps to improve the lives of women and girls in our local communities is through our Salute to Service Awards program.  We give out the following awards each year.

Gold Key Award

Soroptimist International of Riverside (SIR) is one of 1700 clubs represented in 119 countries and territories throughout the world.  One of the goals of Soroptimist International is to promote "The Dignity of Service".  Our way of achieving this goal was to establish the SIR Gold Key Award.

The Gold Key Award gives recognition for community volunteer accomplishments and community service to the City of Riverside.
Eligibility:
  • A woman who volunteers mainly in the Riverside area,
  • Has served at least 10 years of volunteer service,
  • Is creative and imaginative,
  • Is a leader with boundless energy and joy,
  • Has worked to improve the lives of women and girls,
  • Has had a significant impact on the lives of women and girls, and
  • Inspires other women.

Making a Difference for Women Awards

The SIR Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women honors a woman who, through her professional or personal efforts, makes an extraordinary difference in the lives of women or girls.  The honoree will be a woman whose work has had a significant impact and has inspired and encouraged other women.

The winner of the award receives a cash donation to a charitable organization of her choice.   Winners of the club-level award will compete for additional recognition at other levels of the Soroptimist International organization.
Eligibility:
  • A woman who volunteers mainly in the Riverside area, and
  • Has served a minimum of two years of volunteer service

Women's Opportunity Awards

WOA, one of Soroptimist's major service project, aids women seeking to improve their economic status by gaining additional skills, training and education.  The program helps women who, as the primary wage earners for their families, must enter or return to the work force.

The women may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education - including books, child care and transportation costs.  Many WOA winners are domestic abuse survivors who use the funds to help rebuild their lives through improved employment opportunities.

Winners of the club-level award will compete for additional recognition at other levels of the Soroptimist International organization.

Each year more that $800,000 is awarded through the WOA program.  Since the program began in 1972, it is estimated that $15 million has been disbursed and more than 20,000 women have been assisted.

Eligibility:
  • A woman with primary financial responsibility for supporting their family,
  • Attending or has been accepted to a vocational/skills training program, or an undergraduate degree program,
  • Has financial need,
  • Is motivated to achieve educational and career goals, and
  • Resides in one of SIA's member countries and territories.

Violet Richardson Award

VRA is a recognition program for young women ages 14-17 engaged in volunteer action within their communitites or school.  A cash award is given to young women whose volunteer activities make the community and world a better place.  The award is in honor of the president of the first Soroptimist club, Violet Richardson, a woman of action, whose indomitable spirit and sense of personal responsibility were demonstrated by her lifelong commitment to volunteering in her community.

The program begins on the Soroptimist club level, with club recipients becoming eligible for additional awards at other levels of the organization. At the Federation (SIA) level, one winner is chosen to receive a finalist award, which includes a cash contribution to the charitable organization of the recipient’s choice.

Eligibility:

  • A young woman 14 to 17 years of age, and
