Soroptimist International of Riverside (SIR), known for improving the lives of women and girls, will be hosting it's 3rd Annual Live Your Dream Conference on Saturday, March 6, 2009. SIR works with Riverside Unified School District (RUSD), Alvord Unified School District (AUSD), and Jurupa Unified School District (JUSD) to identify 7th and 8th grade girls who would benefit from this conference. The conference is designed to help young girls identify the steps they need to take to reach their dreams.
"One in four female students will not graduate with a regular high school diploma." according to a recent study by the National Women's Law Center. One of the reasons for dropping out is the lack of future educational goals.
The young ladies have heard about the value of "Perseverance" from The Honorable Maureen Duffy-Lewis, Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court, The Ten Principles to Independence and Success from Sue Mitchell, Owner of Riverside Personnel Services, Inc. and "One Great Goal" from author Ursula Mentjes, Potential Quest. They also heard the dream stories directly from women in various industries. "Professional women should be the first to give back to the young women in our community," says Veronica Forest, chair of the Live Your Dream Conference. "We are giving these ladies a road map to the future. There is no GPS for life, but there are certainly women who have been there before and can help navigate the twists and turns."
