Soroptimist International of Riverside has, since its Charter on April 10, 1948, offered business and professional women who live or work in Riverside an opportunity to become involved in relevant community service projects.
Soroptimist, coined from the Latin "soror" and "optima" (the best for women), began in Oakland, CA, in 1921, when 80 women were recommended for membership in a club of women professionals being organized by Stuart Morrow, who had originally come to the area to organize a men's service club. The first club in England was in Greater London in 1923. Since then, outstanding women from many parts of the world have become dedicated Soroptimists.
The UN officially recognized Soroptimist International by granting it Category I status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This means Soroptimist International can send representatives to specialized agency meetings.
International conventions every four years bring together Soroptimists from around the world and provide the exchange of ideas, interesting contacts, entertainment, inspiration and the formation of lasting friendships.
Soroptimist International of Riverside is a nonprofit charitable organization under the Soroptimist International of the Americas 501(c)(3) Group Tax Exemption No. 3899. |
